Given the prominence of superheroes in today’s wide array of media, it shouldn’t be too surprising that there are all sorts of gaming projects attached to properties like Marvel and DC Comics in being developed in secret. But especially recently, it seems like a lot of these projects never really get off the ground (like the Superman video game from Rocksteady or other developers, and in the case of a new Marvel MMO, which is now officially dead.
For those unaware, the Marvel MMO was going to be made by Daybreak Games and Dimensional Ink. If that sounds familiar, it’s because they created the hugely popular (and still ongoing) MMO DC Universe Online. And yet, despite that pedigree, they won’t be able to make its Marvel counterpart work.
“EG7 announced today that it will be discontinuing development of the Marvel Project at Daybreak Games,” the press release reads. “Based on the reassessment of the development risk profile, the size of the investment and the long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the board of directors has decided to modify the development priorities and to reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.
As for what the team will focus on now:
“The company planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years,” the press release continues. “The company will now diversify this investment across several smaller projects across the group, including previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, and new gaming opportunities with our original IPs. owners.”
So they were clearly going to spend some time on it, but things just didn’t work out. Well, maybe the next one will be what fans will see.
