Gabe Newell, the president of Valve Software, isn’t very fond of people promoting the Metaverse.
During an interview with Gamer on PCNewell explained that many metaverse trends that some companies push like an exciting new thing are just old ideas that many of us have seen before.
“Most people who talk about the metaverse have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. And they apparently never played an MMO,” Newell said. “They’re like, ‘Oh, you’ll have this customizable avatar.’ And it’s like, well… go to La Noscea in Final Fantasy 14 and tell me this is not a solved problem from ten years ago, not some fabulous thing that you are, you know, inventing.
Inasmuch as greedy Final Fantasy 14 fanI can confirm that virtually every city-state in the game is livelier than any metaverse demo shown so far.
Newell is far from the only gaming industry veteran who isn’t a fan either. Last month, PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi speaks ill of the metaverseeven calling VR headsets “boring” among other less than pleasant things.
The Metaverse has been a hot topic in the games industry for several months nowand we’ll probably be hearing about it for some time to come.
