Sad news for anyone who was looking forward to playing the Marvel-themed MMO developed by Daybreak Games. The studios have announced that the project, announced last fall, has been cancelled.
The studio’s parent company, Enad Global 7, had announced that it planned to redistribute development to other projects as investing in the Marvel MMO was considered too risky:
“EG7 announced today that it is discontinuing development of the Marvel Project at Daybreak Games. Based on the reassessment of the development risk profile, the size of the investment and the long-term strategy of the group’s product portfolio, the board of directors decided to modify the development priorities and to reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term solutions. projects. The company planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years. The company will now diversify this investment across several smaller projects across the group, including previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, and new gaming opportunities with our original IPs. Along with this reallocation, the company expects an impairment of approximately SEK 230 million of project-related assets in the second quarter of 2022. As one of the long-term investments, the modification of the Marvel project plan n will not affect revenues and profits in the short to medium term. other than the impact on the balance sheet and the P&L related to the impairment.“
Daybreak Games, formerly SONY Online Entertainment or SOE, is one of the oldest MMO developers. They are the same team responsible for the popular EverQuest series of games, one of the first popular MMOs.
They also developed DC Universe Online, planet side, Star Wars Galaxies, The Lord of the Rings online and Dungeons & Dragons Online.
The Marvel project was led by Jack Emmert, one of the creators of the city of heroes MMOs. It’s unfortunate that we can’t see their perspective on the Marvel Universe.
Funny enough, this isn’t the first time a Marvel MMO has been cancelled. Marvel Universe Online was developed by Cryptic Studios.
But the project was scrapped and reworked in Champions Online due to legal issues.
Are you disappointed with the cancellation of the game?
