Concept art of Day Break Games’ canceled Marvel MMO has been found online.
Earlier in the week, it was reported that Daybreak Games’ MMO Marvel had been cancelled. group, the board decided to change development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects.
Following the cancellation, Pixelkings lead designer Ramiro Galan shared a handful of images on his ArtStation portfolio that give us our first look at what the MMO’s character creation screen might have looked like. The gallery description also notes that it would have had “an emphasis on rich, vibrant colors with stylistic tones that pay homage to Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse.”
The images show that the player could have chosen between playing as a hero or heroine and would have started the character creation process by being able to choose between four factions, SHIELD, the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. They could then have chosen between several different outfits, including one with a Marvel logo and another with a lightning bolt design.
After that, the player could then add several face marks to their character and decide on their name. Unfortunately, Galan’s work shows us only one choice of power – electricity. The player character here is shown running around with this theme and basing their name, style and facial markings around this power, but obviously there would have been more choices in the final game – we can’t. just not seeing them here.
The art style has some shades of Into the Spider-Verse, from its bold color palette and over-the-top designs to the player character having their own speech bubbles and joking around with the “comic book writer”. It’s a pretty big change from Daybreak Games’ DC Universe Online, which had a more standard art style.
